Modern Life Is Rubbish By Kristian Jones
Contemporary artist Kristian Jones explores human interaction with the modern world, through his esoteric print-work. Employing an illustrative style, Jones' work creates an uneasy balance between childish innocence and twisted surreality, to probe the problems of contemporary society, while crafting a distinctive and striking aesthetic. 'Modern Life is Rubbish' depicts a family, seated around a table at mealtime in sickly-sweet 1950s style. On the surface, the line drawing presents an idealised situation (even a 'home sweet home' sign hangs in the background) but a closer look reveals that each characters' face is melting, as it gazes at a tablet (arch-symbol of the modern world!), which emits a bright red beam of light into the dripping visages. Reflexive, self-aware and highly pertinent, 'Modern Life is Rubbish' uses familiar aesthetic convention to reveal the deep societal problems of twenty-first century living: a truly powerful piece of contemporary print-work.
